Activities on offer in
the surrounding area
You can go on wonderful excursions on foot directly from the ALISSEOS location.
Whether it’s short walks, longer hikes or a daily jogging route – the choice is yours!
Just a few minutes away is our village of Pigi, a very romantic and typical mountain village of the Mani. Next to the large church, you can eat and drink very well in the village square at Stathi. A special attraction there is the live music with Greek songs and ballads. There is dancing twice a week, an unforgettable experience every time.
If you follow the footpath behind Pigi, you will soon come to the next village, Platsa, which is larger and where a small kafenion is open during the day.
From Platsa, a footpath with magnificent views takes you to a 1000-year-old abandoned monastery in Kabinari and, below it, the most beautiful Greek theatre for us with a breathtaking view over the sea; sitting there at sunset, possibly with a sundowner, is guaranteed to be a lasting memory.
Another beautiful little hike on ancient Maniotic donkey tracks, the Monopatia, takes you to the sea and straight to Pantasi beach. The way home is of course a little more strenuous, as you have to reach the 200 metres in altitude of your house.
Longer hikes in the nearby nature reserve of the Taygetos Mountains are a safe adventure in unspoilt nature. All hiking trails are labelled E4 on detailed maps.
One of our recommendations is the approximately four-hour hike through the famous Vikos Gorge. It requires sturdy footwear and provisions, as there are a few short scrambles on remote paths.
Or you can go on extended hikes in the Taygetos Mountains at an altitude of 1500 to 1900 metres through forests with trees over 50 metres high. They call it the “royal forest”, and rightly so. From there, you can also hike to the summit of the highest mountain in the range – Profitis Elias. There are also guided tours and the opportunity to spend the night up there in tents as part of a group, because the sunrise from there is spectacular.
Of course, trips by car to the surrounding area are just as attractive. The small road by the sea along the rocky coast takes you to hidden bays and the former captain’s village of Trachila.
Heading north, you can reach the tourist resort of Stoupa in 15 minutes and the chic town of Kardamili in 20 minutes.
We always recommend a round trip to the Manioti villages in the mountains. Your drive goes from Platsa to Milea; to Karyovouni with a traditional taverna under gigantic plane trees; to Kastania with its unique and beautifully renovated church; to Saidona at an altitude of 700 metres; to Exochori with its breathtaking gorge and the restaurant above; further towards Proastio, a short detour to the monastery of Vaidenitsa is worthwhile; after Proastio back to the sea, arriving in Kardamili.
Longer excursions on good roads to the outer Mani to Itilo, Areopolis, the famous caves of Dirou and the unique tower city of Vathia are on the “to-do list”. The former pirate villages of Gerolimenas and Porto Kagio are great places to rest and swim.
